Gusto Mo Bang Kumita? (Want to Earn Additional Income?)

ShareThis

Ang prinsipyo ko nga there is always something or someone better.

Arthro Has Dangerous Side Effects?

ShareThis

Dr Irene Fernandez, Co-founder and Executive Director of Tenaganita Acquitted

ShareThis
The Kuala Lumpur High Court has acquitted Dr Irene Fernandez, co-founder and executive director of Tenaganita.

The first words as she was congratulated, Irene said, "I am free! At last I am free!"

A scheduled court appeals hearing, which was to last until Friday 28 November was today ended when Judge Mohamad Apandi Ali gave his decision and set aside her 2003 conviction and reversed the conviction and sentencing.

Minutes later, Irene walked out of the court-room, free at last, saying, “I’m relieved that there’s light at the end of the tunnel.”

“I spoke the truth (and now) the conviction has been set aside,” she added.

It was a day of double surprises. The defence lawyer, M. Puravalen had asked that the motion of appeal stay. Turning the Public Prosecutor Shamsul Sulaiman, the judged then asked if the prosecution opposed the motion.

“Having been served the type-written notes, and having thoughtfully studied the notes, I have decided in the interest of justice, that justice itself would not be served by opposing this appeal.”

“You do not oppose, does that mean that you concede the case?” the judge asked.

“We do not oppose the appeal,” was the quiet reply.

The defence then asked that the conviction and sentence be set aside. The came the final surprise. From the bench, the judge gave his decision. “In the light of the respondent and Public Prosecutor is not opposing the appeal, I set aside and reverse the conviction and sentencing.”

The court room erupted into continuous loud cheers which the judge had to wave down. It has been thirteen long years, too long for anyone to wait to have their name cleared by the courts. But Irene has finally found closure.

Surrounded by her family, friends, colleagues and supporters, Irene said that the rights of defenders must be upheld. Ultimately, it is the people that we work with – migrants and refugees – that have been handed this victory. There is also vindication in the work that Irene does, and the organization that she heads.

Finally, to Ms Moganambal, who is Irene’s defence lawyer – from Irene and Tenaganita –we thank you and we love you.

Survivor Philippines at ang Kabaklaan (Survivor Philippines Goes Gay)

ShareThis

Support Irene Fernandez Final Trial in Malaysia

ShareThis
As a person I deeply salute people who decided to do something despite the difficulty and dangers this might give to him or her. While reading my emails I was heartbroken that someone who just want to help our fellow Filipino migrant workers was suffering inside a Malaysian jail. I hope that through this simple post in this blog and through your support we could together help Irene Fernandez get the justice which she so deserves... please read on below...

Dear Friends,

Greetings!

We have drafted a petition letter for Dr. Irene Fernandez's freedom. Dr. Fernandez is a staunch human rights activist and is the director and co-founder of Tenaganita, a Malaysian NGO that promotes the rights and welfare of migrant and agricultural workers. She is also a Steering Council Member of Pesticide Action Network Asia and the Pacific (PAN AP) and the People's Coalition on Food Sovereignty (PCFS), among many organisations. In 2005, she was given the Right Livelihood Award for "her outstanding and courageous work to stop violence against women and abuses of migrant and poor workers".

In 1995, Dr. Fernandez published a report on the living conditions of migrant workers in Malaysia’s detention centres. She was charged with 'maliciously publishing false news' against the Malaysian government in 1996. After seven years of trial, the longest in Malaysian judicial history, she was found guilty in 2003. She was allowed bail pending appeal. Her civil rights are now restricted, but she carries on her everyday life and continues her work.

The trial of Dr. Fernandez will resume on 24th- 28th November, 2008 and this may be the final round of hearings in the High Court in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

We call on organisations, institutions and individuals to support Dr. Fernandez by signing the petition letter which is addressed to the Malaysian government and other institutions in Malaysia, and is posted at http://www.foodsov.org/html/petition11.php

By signing the letter, you and your organisation or institution will appeal for justice and rights of human rights defenders like Dr. Fernandez and it may give her the freedom to continue her work with migrant workers as well as helping communities achieve genuine people's Food Sovereignty.

Please circulate widely.

Thank you.
Clara Guzman - PAN AP

I hope that you find time to sign the petition and help Irene.

Let us Help Ban Cluster Bombs Now!

ShareThis
Cluster munitions are weapons made up of multiple explosive submunitions or bomblets which are dispensed from a container which opens in mid-air after being deployed mainly by aircraft. They pose a unique and grave lethal threat to civilians both during and after armed conflict in which they are used.

This december 3, states will sign the convention on cluster munitions in oslo, norway. essentially it calls for the following:

1) stop the use of cluster bombs;

2) destroy the existing stockpiles;

3) clear the remnants; and

4) assist the victims.

We need your help. MAKE IT HAPPEN... Help Ban Cluster Bombs Now!

SIGN THE PEOPLE'S TREATY HERE: http://www.minesactioncanada.org/peoples_treaty/

WHY SIGN THE PEOPLE'S TREATY?*

1. We do not want them to become an actual problematic presence here.

2. They are in fact an actual problematic presence in other countries or areas where overseas Filipinos are found. One such area was southern Lebanon and northern Israel in August 2006 where, respectively, Israel and the Lebanon-based Hezbollah non-state armed group used cluster munitions to horrendous effect. They were used again just last August in the Russia-Georgia War.

3. We express our humanitarian solidarity with all such victims of cluster munitions, and most especially to those closest to home – in our Southeast Asian neighbors Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam. This is the most cluster bombed region resulting from the Vietnam War of four decades ago.

4. We do not want our territory to be ever used again for the infliction of devastation by cluster bombs on our Asian neighbors. There are indications that the former U.S. military bases in the Philippines were used as staging or transit points, even if not the main ones, for U.S. B-52 cluster bombing during the Vietnam War.

5. We have a foreign policy committed to international peace and security as shown by Philippine adherence to most humanitarian, weapons and disarmament treaties. In our premium region of the ASEAN, we share the longtime aspiration for a "Zone of Peace, Freedom and Neutrality" (ZOPFAN).

*from Atty. Soliman Santos Jr. (2008) The New Cluster Munitions Ban Treaty and the May 2008 Dublin Diplomatic Conference

A Sonet About the High Price of Electricity in the Philippines

10 pantig

Tubo ang laging nasa kukote
Ng namamahala sa kuryente
Iniisip lang nila'y sarili
At sa taumbaya'y walang paki.

Sa Meralco'y dapat nang masabi
Salamat at may ilaw sa gabi
At araw-araw ay may kuryente
Ngunit presyo nito'y sadyang grabe!

Ano kaya kung isabotahe?
Lider nito'y lagyan ng boltahe?
Di kaya magmura ang kuryente?
O tayo muna'y maghunos-dili?

Ang masa'y talagang pinepeste
Ng taas ng presyo ng kuryente.

PAMURAHIN ANG KURYENTE

ni Gregorio V. Bituin Jr.
10 pantig

O, sobrang mahal na ng kuryente
At kaming dukha ang nadadale
Gobyerno'y dapat tumulong dine
Pagkat tayo'y kanilang botante.

Sa kongresista, mga alkalde
Sa senador at sa presidente
Kayo pa ba sa baya'y may silbi?
Aba'y pamurahin ang kuryente!

Sa kababaihan, anluwagi
Manggagawa, magsasaka, sastre
Lahat ng sektor, at estudyante
Magkaisa't nang ating masabi:

Kung hindi ninyo diringgin kami
Kayo pala'y sadyang walang silbi!

Establishing an emergency fund
Excerpts from “Kaya Mo, Pinoy! 12 Steps to Build Wealth on Any Incoming”
www.pinoysmartsavers.com/kayamopinoy.html

One of the first things you should do when you start a personal savings and wealth building program is to establish an emergency fund. An emergency fund is reserved money that you can use during financial emergencies.

Your emergency fund will provide money to cover immediate expenses while you are adjusting to an emergency situation. Insurance plans can cover your financial needs in case of accidents, sickness or death. But it will take days, weeks, even months to process your claims and receive the benefits from your insurance policy.

Don’t think about investing your money if you still don’t have enough emergency fund. Building the fund should be one of your top priorities. Even if you have insurance protection you should still establish an emergency fund because there are some other emergency situations which are not covered by any insurance plan, like an urgent trip to the province to see a dying parent.

Ideally, you should have an emergency fund equivalent to 3 to 6 times your monthly income. This should be sufficient to cover most unexpected expenses. So if you’re earning P15,000 monthly, your emergency fund should be between P45,000 to P90,000.

Historian and political philosopher, Dr. Floro Quibuyen is set to talk about misrepresentations of Jose Rizal in his lecture titled, "What Nation Was Aborted? Recovering History From Historians" on November 11, Tuesday, starting 4pm, at the Museo ng Maynila (Army and Navy Club), Roxas Blvd., Manila. The lecture is in line with the release of his latest work published by Ateneo Press, "A Nation Aborted: Rizal, American Hegemony, and Philippine Nationalism." The book is said to demand a reorientation from the manufactured notions of Rizal and "official nationalism."

Ms. Gemma Cruz-Araneta, Vice Chair of Manila Historical And Heritage Commission Will open the program, followed by a lecture by Ms. Sylvian Mayuga, and a discussion facilitated by Mr. Alex Dacanay. Also, Quibuyen's critically acclaimed "Hibik sa Dapit-hapon," a film on Josephine Bracken's "imagining" of Rizal's execution will be shown.

Democrat Barack Obama Wins United States Presidency by Huge Margin

ShareThis
Barack Obama will win the United States election by an electoral vote of 347 to John McCains 178. This is my personal prediction based on the current trend of the polls and the last survey before election day. Obama will be making history as the first ever African-American President. Obama had taken key states of Pennsylvania and Ohio. Ohio has voted for the winning presidential candidate in every election since 1964.

As of the writing of this article based on CNN Projects Obama has 207 electoral votes against McCains 95.

Let us bring into analysis key states.

Barack Obama Column:

Minnesota - 10
Wisconsin - 10
Illinois - 21
Michigan - 17
Ohio - 20
Pennsylvania - 21
New York - 31
Maine - 4
Vermont - 3
New Hampshire - 4
Massachusetts - 12
Connecticut - 7
Rhode Island - 4
New Jersey - 12
Delaware - 3
Maryland - 10
District of Columbia - 3

California - 55
Florida - 27
North Carolina - 15
Virginia - 13
Hawaii - 4
Nevada - 5
Washington - 11
Oregon - 7
Idaho - 4
TOTAL ELECTORAL VOTES - 347

John McCain Column/span>:

Wyoming - 3
North Dakota - 3
South Dakota - 3
Nebraska - 5
Kansas - 6
Oklahoma - 7
Texas - 34
Louisiana - 9
Arkansas - 6
Missouri - 11

South Carolina - 8
Alaska - 3
Montana - 3

This is probably the largest or biggest landslide ever by any United States President and had effectively rewritten the political map of the United States. The world awaits as Obama makes his first speech as the upcoming President of the United States when polls finally gets determined.

Tula Laban sa Genetically-Modified Organisms o GMO

ShareThis

13 pantig bawat taludtod

Ano bang nangyayari sa sandaigdigan
Bakit pati selula'y pinakialaman
Ginawa ba nila'y sagot sa kagutuman
O ito ba'y kagaguhan at kahangalan?

Bakit kailangang baguhin ang selula
Para bumilis daw ang paglago ng bunga
Nitong puno, halaman, hayop at iba pa

At bayani raw silang dapat maturingan

Pagkain at sistema'y kontrolado nila.

Tandaang tinurang prinsipyo nilang imbi

Pwede Kang Bumoto kina John McCain o Barack Obama (Your Chance to Vote for the U.S. Elections)

ShareThis
IF THE WORLD COULD VOTE?.

November 4th 2008 the American people will choose a new president. The president of the United States of America is the most powerful person in the world.

We would like to know who would be the next president of the United States of America - if the world could vote!

In the presidential election in 2004 122,267,553 people voted. 6,500,000,000 people did not.

Our mission is to get more people to vote than voted in the last election. Mission impossible, we know, but still, wouldn't it be great to see what the whole world thinks?

If we are to have any chance of reaching that goal we need your help. Tell all your friends around the world about iftheworldcouldvote.com. You can send them email, share it on Facebook (we also have a group you can join), digg it, reddit, save to delicious ... Or all of it. So go ahead. Let's see who would be the next president of the United States of America - if the world could vote;)

Stop the War in Mindanao and Resume Peace Talks Now!

ShareThis

Press Statement
28 October 2008

A CALL FOR THE IMMEDIATE CESSATION OF HOSTILITIES AND RESUMPTION OF PEACE TALKS

More than 70 tri-people youth leaders coming from different organizations all over the country have gathered here in Cotabato for the conduct of the Mindanao Youth Peace Summit and Peace Mission, themed “Building Ethno-Cultural and Interfaith Bridges of Understanding among Youth.” This summit provided avenues for youth leaders to witness firsthand the effects of the ongoing armed hostilities.

The interaction of participants provided an atmosphere of dialogue and deeper understanding of the richer diversity of our cultures. The summit fostered an appreciation of the different cultural and faith backgrounds of the youth in Mindanao.

The youth leaders witnessed the glaring effects of armed violence in three conflict-affected communities. The effects of armed violence were glaring. In Datu Piang and Midsayap, thousands of evacuees lined the roads leading to the town centers, schools were turned into evacuation camps preventing youth from continuing their education, and burnt houses and military check-points marked the landscape. Basic needs such as food and medicine are scarce. Meanwhile in North Upi, though unaffected by direct violence, the Tedurays are threatened by the consequences of the worsening peace situation.

The visit provided a venue for sharing and discussing experiences regarding the peace and conflict situation as well as motivated young leaders to come up with a peace agenda, calling for the following:

  1. For the GRP and MILF to respect and uphold International Humanitarian Law and the human rights of civilians particularly the vulnerable sectors of women, elderly, children and youth;
  2. For the government, to cease all military offensives, end the humanitarian tragedy that is affecting hundreds of thousands of civilians, and immediately resume the formal peace negotiations with the MILF;
  3. For the UN and the international community to provide humanitarian assistance and intervention to the internally displaced persons in Mindanao, put pressure to the GRP and MILF to restart the formal negotiations.

In the midst of hopelessness with the peace situation, the Muslim, Christian and Indigenous Peoples youth in the Mindanao Youth Peace Summit and Peace Mission remain steadfast in their aspiration for a just and peaceful Mindanao.
