AKBAYAN Press Statement: On endorsing Mar

On August 16, 2009, during its 4th Regular National Congress, AKBAYAN Party approved a resolution endorsing Mar Roxas for president.

The endorsement is a result of a long internal process and consultation with its local membership, national leaders, and allied mass movements.

The endorsement is premised on several considerations, primary of which is the nature of the 2010 elections: that it is crucial that we elect an administration that will reverse the damages wrought by the GMA government. From the cleansing of the electoral process to ensuring that GMA and her cohorts are held accountable for the illegal acts that they have committed, certain ‘minimum’ reforms must pursued and promptly implemented. Therefore, in the same manner that we believe that we cannot simply criticize GMA without offering any alternative, AKBAYAN cannot imagine supporting any presidential bet or any slate that is tarnished by allegations of corruption, more so by the possibility of a post-2010 negotiation or reconciliation with the GMA administration.

AKBAYAN has worked with Senator Mar Roxas on several issues. We have campaigned with him for the passage of the Cheaper Medicines law and CARPER, in various efforts to block the administration-backed measures such as the Human Security Bill and CON ASS, and other anti-GMA initiatives on the issues of corruption and fraud.

AKBAYAN recognizes, too, that in several instances, it has found itself in a position opposite Mar Roxas. This endorsement is thus based on mutual and healthy respect of differences. As LP stalwart and Senator Noynoy Aquino said in his speech during the Opening Ceremonies of AKBAYAN’s National Congress, this divergence of opinion is not at all negative. Indeed, this forms part of a recipe to come up with
better ideas to improve our country’s situation.

Our declaration of support for Senator Mar Roxas doesn’t alter our stance as an independent and progressive political party, and we shall not surrender our own principles and our own platform. We will continue to engage Sen. Mar Roxas in a dialogue to ensure that his platform is geared towards reform and political modernization.

This engagement in the presidential race is in pursuit of AKBAYAN’s main agenda: to make politics work for the interest and welfare of the Filipino people.
